Bridging Clinical and Non-Clinical Health Practice: Opportunities and Challenges

Yunan Chen

is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Informatics, University of California Irvine. She has conducted various research projects in examining the use of EMR systems in clinical settings, as well as studying the information behaviors about chronic patients at home settings. Her current work investigates the use of a PHR system in mediating patient-provider interactions that occur across clinical and non-clinical settings.

Charlotte Tang

is a post-doctoral fellow in the Department of Computer Science, University of British Columbia. She has rich experience in conducting field studies in a variety of settings including hospitals, homes and public spaces. She holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science. Her research investigated nurses’ communication in clinical settings and patients’ transition from hospitals to primary care. Her current research examines technology design for an online cognitive assessment tool for prescreening dementia to be self-administered at home.

Karen Cheng

is a Senior Research Scientist in the Department of Informatics, University of California Irvine and Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry, Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science. Her research focuses on mobile systems of health interventions and behavior change.  She has worked with underserved populations in Southern California, as well as in Angola, Rwanda, and Jamaica.

SunYoung Park

is a Ph.D. student in the Department of Informatics, University of California Irvine. She was trained as a Visual, Product, and Interaction Designer and HCI design researcher. She is currently working on an observational study in an Emergency Department affiliated with a large teaching hospital about the paper-to-electronic transition of the rollout of an EMR system.
