Black History Month

Organizations

In February, UC Irvine’s Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences (ICS) celebrates Black History Month by highlighting pioneers in science and technology and sharing resources to expand diversity in tech. This year, we’re following the lead of Dana Boone, a student in Florida who, in 2021, put up at a display at his elementary school of the Periodic Table of Black History, created in 2019 by staff members at the Lakeland Public Library in Florida. Using that model as a foundation, we’ve created our own version, and here are the organizations included:

9 BG BioGals empowers women of color and engages communities to co-create dynamic solutions for a more sustainable world.
17 BGC Black Girls Code builds pathways for young women of color to embrace the current tech marketplace as builders and creators by introducing them to skills in computer programming and technology.
35 BiT Blacks in Technology is a tech focused community and media organization that is dedicated to increasing the representation and participation of Black people in the technology industry.
53 BUiLT Blacks United in Leading Technology International is dedicated, with its allies, to increasing the representation and participation of Black people in the technology industry by fostering the connection, development, and employment of its members.
71 DAIR Distributed Artificial Intelligence Research is an interdisciplinary and globally distributed AI research institute rooted in the belief that AI is not inevitable, its harms are preventable, and when its production and deployment include diverse perspectives and deliberate processes it can be beneficial.
