Honeycomb Weathering

Hollowed rock

This is at the top of one of the rocky outcroppings on the beach, far above tideline.
I showed this photo to a geologist for the Getty Conservation Institute, who told me that
this weathering pattern is believed to be formed by salt crystals, especially in windy
coastal areas like Pfeiffer Beach where the wind evaporates the salt spray quickly.
