ICS 80 Careers in Computing

Course Description

The goal is for students to understand the various careers available to ICS majors and how to best prepare for them.

To get a P, you must show up for more than 80% of the talks, and do all of the homework assignments. The homework assignments will consist of finding information about internships, graduate school, and full time careers.

Course Conduct

This course differs from most since it will feature guest lecturers from industry. They are guests and potential future employers of ICS majors. Therefore, it is in everyone's best interest to treat them with respect, e.g., by showing up to class on time, being quiet and attentive during their talks, not leaving in the middle of class, etc. They do understand how college students dress when not at job interviews so it is not necessary to dress up for the class. Most of the companies will be accepting resumes for full time employment or for internships, so bring one

One company who was in this class last year refused to come back because the class was rude. Therefore, the following procedure will be used for attendance. When you arrive, you will be handed a slip of paper to fill out with your name and student number from the TA. These will not be available once the class starts, so arrive on time. The TA will collect them at the end of class, so to get credit for the class, don't leave early. Anyone being disruptive in class (e.g., carrying on a conversation) will be asked to leave the class permanently. I don't like having to do this, but to preserve employment opportunities for all students, it's necessary. This is a 2 credit pass/fail class that fulfils no university requirement, so if the class doesn't interest you, you will be allowed to drop at any time.
