Homeschool Visit

On August 19, 2005, nine homeschool children and their parents visited our lab to interact with the project (giving us signed permission to use the experience for our research). Photographs include the children, their parents, and our team observing and recording the interaction. In addition to usual play, the parents acted as an opposing force that the children had to prevent from destroying the islands' ecosystems.

Transferring an item Watching the item transfer Multiple people interacting This island is almost completely restored One of two islands in need of retoration Boys sharing the tablet; girls taking a break Bill passes out the tablets so the players can get to work Looking for a Coral Tree to help this ecosystem grow A player rushing to finish restoration A player collects a hummingbird The hummingbird flies into the box The children work together to restore the island Hitting the deforestation button causes the lush background to fade away Bill observes another player at the National Park The tablet does not need to be in an exact position for transfer to occur Tilting the box causes the seed to roll Two girls share a tablet while others work on an island The deforested island is bleak and desolate Everyone gets involved in reconstruction A bird on a desolate island won't stay for long The island's background changes to reflect its state This island has one of each species The glowing 'kill' button is less interesting than the animated box
