ICS 143: Principles of Operating Systems |
| Principles and
concepts of process and resource management,
especially as seen in operating systems. Processes, memory management,
protection, scheduling, file systems, and I/O systems are covered.
Concepts illustrated in the context of several well-known systems.
Prerequisite(s): ICS 141. ICS 143 and ECE 142 may not both be taken for credit. |

| Organization and structure of modern multimedia systems; audio and video encoding/compression; quality of service concepts; scheduling algorithms for multimedia; resource management in distributed multimedia systems; multimedia protocols over high-speed networks; synchronization schemes; multimedia applications and teleservices. |
| ICS 243F: Middleware Networks and Distributed Applications |
| This course discusses concepts, techniques and issues in developing distributed systems middleware that provides high performance in large scale distributed and networked environments. Issues in ensuring the satisfaction of QoS requirements for multimedia applications via middleware environments will also be discussed. The course will cover existing middleware standards and solutions such as DCE, CORBA, DCOM, Jini and Espeak and discuss their relative advantages and shortcomings |
| ICS 280: Systems Support for Sensor Networks |
| This course covers software and data architectures for sensor networks spanning software from sensor nodes, operating system to distributed services and applications that enable construction of highly scalable sensor networks (from thousands to millions of active/passing sensing nodes), intelligent (e.g., application adaptive, energy and bandwidth efficient) movement and processing of data. |
